Why your website still doesn't feel right
- Have you ever shared your website with someone and immediately hoped they wouldn't open it right away?
- Or launched a new offer only to find yourself overwhelmed with manual work?
- Or spent an hour "making a few updates" to your website, only to close your laptop feeling that something was still... off?
Most people assume these are website problems.
In my experience, they usually aren't.
After working with businesses across different industries, I've noticed the same patterns appearing again and again. Interestingly, they show up long before a website is designed — and they continue to influence it long after it's launched.
Here are the 3 gaps I see most often.
Prefer watching instead of reading?
Gap 1 — Clarity.
When your website reflects uncertainty
Many people start by looking for a better design.
Or better copy.
Or a new homepage.
But the real question is somewhere different.
Most business owners can explain what they do.
Far fewer can confidently answer questions like:
- What makes working with you special?
- What do clients remember after working with you?
- What values shape the way you work?
Those answers often exist — you've just never taken the time to put them into words.
What this gap looks like
- You don't feel proud to share your website.
- Something feels "off," but you can't quite explain why.
- You'd rather send people to your LinkedIn profile instead.
The mistake
Starting with pages, copy, and design before defining what truly makes your business different. A website can't communicate something that hasn't been clarified yet.
The shift
Instead of asking:
Does my website look professional?
Ask:
What do I want people to understand, feel, and remember after visiting my website?
Once those answers become clear, building the website becomes surprisingly simple.
And in my experience, nothing is more satisfying than watching someone finally look at their website and think:
"Yes. This actually feels like me."
Gap 2: Purpose
When your website exists, but doesn't have a job
Imagine launching a new offer.
Messages start arriving. Discovery calls get booked. Exciting...
Until you realize you're answering the same questions every single day... You have a dozen tabs open. Your head is spinning. You're constantly wondering, "Did I send everything? Did I update the CRM? Did I remember to sync my spreadsheet?"
Your website exists. But it isn't actually helping.
That's often the moment people ask themselves,
"Do I even need a website? Everyone just messages me directly anyway."
What this gap looks like
- Different parts of your business aren't well stitched together.
- You're constantly doing things manually.
- Your website feels like another thing to manage.
The mistake
Building a website before deciding what role it should play in your business.
The shift
Instead of asking:
Does my website look professional?
Ask:
How does someone move through my business from stranger to client?
Not every website has the same purpose.
Some generate leads.
Some support sales conversations.
Some build trust.
Some simply reassure potential clients that they're in the right place.
None of those answers is wrong. The problem is when there isn't an answer at all.
When your website has a clear role, it stops being a separate project and becomes part of how your business works.
Gap 3: Evolution
When your business has outgrown your website
This is the hardest one to notice.
Not because your website is bad. Because your business has changed.
You update a sentence. Add another testimonial. Create a new offer. Replace a photo... Each update makes perfect sense. But eventually the website starts feeling like patchwork.
Not because it was poorly designed. Because it was designed for a different version of your business.
What this gap looks like
- Your website no longer feels like you.
- Managing your website feels heavier than it should.
- Everything feels patched together.
The mistake
Keeping an old website alive with small updates instead of stepping back and rethinking it.
The shift
Instead of asking:
Is my website finished?
Ask:
Does my website reflect the business I have today?
Sometimes the best improvement isn't another small update. It's stepping back and asking:
If I were building this website today, would I build it the same way?
Sometimes the answer is no.
What's your website trying to tell you?
A website is rarely the starting point.
It's the place where all the decisions you've already made about your business become visible.
If your business isn't clear, your website won't be either.
If your website doesn't have a clear purpose, redesigning it won't solve the problem.
If your business has evolved, eventually your website will ask to evolve too.
The website isn't trying to work against you.
It's trying to tell you something.
The next time something feels off, I'd encourage you to pause before changing another headline, buying another template, or rewriting another page.
Instead, ask yourself one question:
What is my website trying to tell me about my business?
The answer might have very little to do with your website.
And that changes everything.
